How many years have you been in the UAE? Born and raised in the UAE, Dubai.
Why did you decided to study fashion?
As a fashion lover, I decided to major in fashion design to have a general background about fashion and designing, and to express the confidence and poise in women.
Your favorite fashion designer: Ralf and Russo.
Tell us about your graduation collection.
Influenced by traditional Emirati culture and traditions, this SS18 collection highlights the contrast between modern structured architectural shapes and classic volumes inspired by the French couture sartorial techniques. The color palette suggests the muted colors of the desert with a delicate floral design reflected in the luxurious hand-painted organza. The silhouette of sand dunes is shown in the soft draping used throughout the garments. These outfits will appear to sophisticated and elegant women.
How is your creative process?
I started my collection by creating different collages and draping on the mannequin to get the perfect volume and to pick the colors for the collection. I had to hand stitch and use different classic couture techniques to get the required results of a specific volume.

Why did you decided to study fashion? I find it rather difficult to express emotions, and I tend to bottle these up until it reaches the brim and starts to spill. Fashion to me is an outlet, portraying a more ideal me who can be everything that I want to be and express anything and everything that I feel; and more than anything, when people like the things that I make, it feels like they are accepting that new me and it gives me great pleasure.

Tell us about your graduation collection.
I wanted my Lucid Dreams collection to be effortless in many ways, from its colors to its shapes & textures. It is minimal yet edgy. The colors are monochrome but popped by a yellow mustard to contrast it. This collection was inspired by a conceptual and virtual story of a girl who’s imagining her Utopia through visuals. This is where I put the eyelets as a detail on the garments to illustrate the perspective of her visions. I wanted to show through this collection that inspirations should come from our subconscious in order to be real.
How is your creative process?
My creative process comes through different stages, from abstract collages to fashion collages to 3D research. For me I find my creativity by molding on the mannequin with a variety of fabrics, layering, cutting, attaching together pieces. I can explore different volumes and shapes using this method. From there I take pictures, print start developing a collection through sketches.
What is your favorite fabric to work with? I don’t have a favorite fabric to work with as I love working with new fabrics. In my collection, it was the first time working with plastic fabric. It was an excellent experience for me.
Now after your graduation, what are your plans? I want to be able to work in a reputable fashion organization to gain experience in the business side. At the same time, on the side, I would like to develop my brand and to expand it on social media and Instagram.

My final year project which consisted of six looks in which I have designed and stitched is a representation of my personality.

The process began with 2D research which was making collages and playing around with shapes. Then a more visual and realistic 3D research, I played around by draping big pieces of fabrics on a mannequin. From that I started developing mini collections and picking up my favorite aspects and details from them.
What is your favorite fabric to work with? The fabrics I have chosen were a big source of inspiration as they helped me visualize my collection even better and led me to sketch thoroughly furthermore. Every fabric that I have chosen created a different feel and touch to my mood, from the flowy suedette satin (which was very tricky to work with), to the delicate open mesh.

CORINNA JOYCE
Nationality: German
Age: I can only say I’m not in my 20s anymore!
Brand: AnaloC Studio (in the making…).
Short Bio: I was born in Germany and have moved and travelled around the world until landing in the UAE 13 years ago. I have had a successful career in luxury hospitality until I decided to pursue my inner dreams and embark into the world of fashion
How many years have you been in the UAE? 13
Why did you decided to study fashion?
My grandmother was a ladies’ tailor and my aunt a textile production technician and patternmaker. I have always been exposed to making clothes and have always loved textiles, but more as a hobby. After pursuing my first career in tourism, which involved a lot of travelling, my second big love after fashion, I decided to finally fully immerse myself and try to make it in the fashion world, hoping to combine both my worlds.
Your favorite fashion designer: John Galliano
Tell us about your graduation.
The inspiration for my collection “A Fragment of Time” comes from my travels to Asia. I was very touched by the Japanese concept ‘Wabi Sabi,’ which means seeing beauty in all things, even the ugly and the imperfect and to celebrate the cycle of growth and decay. Combined with a technique called ‘Kintsugi’ in which Japanese repair broken objects with gold instead of throwing them away, which makes them even more precious, I employed the mending embroidery technique ‘Sashiko’ to embellish my garments with off-cuts and scraps from previous collections to show how beautiful waste can be and combine different fabrics with their own stories into a new.
My fabrics are all ethically sourced, bamboo, hemp, organic cottons, kept in white and unbleached neutrals to give a blank canvas for the colorful embroidery signifying the life sprouting from the cracks. I have combined these fabrics with ethnic pieces that I find on my travels and overstock fabrics from local designers I have worked with.
I am very passionate about sustainability and would like to emphasize with my collection that we cannot ignore the fashion industry’s impact on the environment and people anymore. Responsibility can be beautiful!
How is your creative process?
I like to start with gathering my thoughts through collages and work with deconstructing and placing garments and fabrics on the body in unexpected ways. I like to touch, feel, and see and find out how a certain fabric I fell in love with would work in a garment.
From there I start with declinations on paper and finding silhouettes and solutions to details and finishings until I have interesting pieces that are in harmony together and follow a greater story.
What is your favorite fabric to work with?
I love all fabrics, it pains me cutting into them sometimes! Personally, I do prefer ethically sourced fabrics like Bamboo, unbleached organic cottons or wools and I LOVE ethnic textiles that I find on my travels. I have used fabrics from Laos, North Vietnam, Germany, Turkey, Canada and Japan, amongst others, in this collection.
Now, after your graduation what are your plans?
I currently work with a local designer and I’d like to find an opportunity in an established fashion house in Europe to gain some more experience for the next 3-5 years before embarking on my own adventure.
Where do you want to see yourself in 5 years?
Ultimately, I’d love to build a sustainable brand and identify and build relationships with small communities in South-East Asia or maybe elsewhere, women who are passing on their textile skills through generations and help preserving that artisanal craft and bringing it into my designs and help these communities commercialize their arts in the wider fashion world.

ANAIKA AJAY
Nationality: Indian
Age: 20 years old
Brand: Sorry not Sorry.
Short Bio: Just your average unicorn who has embraced our generation’s nonchalant mindset, broken free from the cocoon that is our society and is unapologetic while doing just that. Mixing media to create wearable art is my specialty.
How many years have you been in the UAE? I was born and raised here.
Why did you decided to study fashion? As much as I consider myself to be a shopaholic; it’s so stressful to find clothes that fit both my body type and personality that I wanted to make clothes for myself and people like me.
Your favorite fashion designer: Jonny Johansson, founder of Acne Studios.
Tell us about your graduation collection.
An amalgamation of Japanese Streetwear and the ‘Western Way of Life’, it fosters our social ideology. It is a portrayal of millennial culture that we as a generation are so heavily influenced by. The high neck, elongated sleeves and deep armholes create the linear silhouette and portray our antisocial behavior. The color palette has a tinge of grey that alludes to a state of limbo that many young adults find themselves in. An unemotional, neutral shade of us. The dripping paint blurs the lines of social conduct, further enforcing our openness to emerging beliefs.
How is your creative process?
I love working with silhouettes more than the garment types itself. Even though the fabrics and colors used play an important role, I feel like the way the sleeves fall or the shape of a garment speaks volumes.
What is your favorite fabric to work with? Neoprene has to be my favorite!
Now, after your graduation what are your plans? I definitely want to work and gain some hands-on experience in the fashion industry itself. I would also like to go more along the lines of fashion photography and learn new techniques that would help me later on.
Where do you want to see yourself in 5 years? In terms of fashion design and pattern making, I want to combine my passion for art and love for fashion and create wearable art installations. I would also like to concentrate on fashion photography and maybe establish myself as a professional photographer.

Brand: ARIA
Short bio: I am a girl who believes in a World where anything is Possible.
How many years have you been in UAE?
I came to UAE only for studies and I am already here for 3 years.
Why did you decide to study fashion?
Fashion is a dream of many little girls. We all love to dress up, it’s inside of us. But to study Fashion, not everyone knows how hard it is. I tried many things and majors before fashion, to realize that I don’t belong to anything but Fashion.
Your favorite fashion designer: It is hard to pick one designer, because from each of them I can see something I really love and something I would never do. But if talking about the style I would say: Stella McCartney
Tell us about your graduation collection.
My Graduation Collection is a combination of retro and classic with a touch of modernity.
It represents a Girl, a real girl with all her elegance and softness. Color choice are from pastel shades to bright mustard and to classic black and white. It shows how confused women can be so she doesn’t know which color she prefers.
With my fabrics choice, I tried to show women from inside and out, how different we can be, different textures – sharp but soft, fluffy, and smooth at the same time shows different moods of a woman. Combination of different textures and colors gives modernity to classy silhouettes.
How is your creative process? I was lost, I wanted to include everything I love at once – my favorite books, movies, stories from my own life , all my favorite colors and I kept combining it all together in my research book – at the end everyone can see what I ended up with .
What is your favorite fabric to work with? It’s too obvious if you see my collection- Wool, is my favorite fabric to work with. It doesn’t stretch or fray a lot, it accepts any shape you want, even though it is hard to iron and steam it sometimes but result can never look bad if it is wool fabric.
Now, after your graduation what are your plans? I think it’s the hardest question to ask a just graduate student. So many plans, ambitions, and goals for the future. Of course, I would love to work in a fashion world, in different companies and become more experienced and noticed. I think it’s really important to do what I love and give everything for my passion.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? In 5 years, such a short period of time , but long enough to become an experienced fashion designer with lots of fresh ideas , that many big companies would appreciate and ask for.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? I want to see myself famous and of course become an experienced designer. I would like to have my own shop with my brand. Let me tell you a bit about my brand. I chose to call it “D’nazar”.
The name is coming from D NazAr (nazik, ar, aru) D (dear dad). We kazakhs, do respect the greater generations- our forefathers. It’s the beginning of generations of our family tree. D is the first letter of my surname, particularly my grandfather’s name. My father is the only son of my granddad to carry the name with proud and honor. My father is so dear to me, D also means Dearest. My wish is to make it known worldwide! NazAr is the root of my name Nazerke. Ar in kazakh gives a strong meaning of faith and Dignity, be truthful, just, polite and honorable. Aru means lady, lady who carries the best features of beauty and wisdom.
So far D Nazar as brand is destined to be a tree with deep roots to grow for generations. Tender, but strong and having a look of beauty in a mild soft manner.
Nazar is an attention, so let this brand be covered by attention.
