PALEO DIET. WHAT IS IT?

Celebrities like Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Biel, Miley Cyrus or Megan Fox among others, do the paleo diet.  Not that they hunt in the wild, even though the name comes from Paleolithic. The base of this diet is what our ancestors use to eat back in the paleo-days.

This diet provides some health benefits such as improved blood lipids, weight loss and reduced pain in autoimmune diseases. We are what we eat, so the paleo diet becomes a way of life. No need for hunting or returning to the caves. It is much easier than that.

In the developed world where we live the diet of most of us is full of carbohydrates. According to experts in the paleo diet, the problem is that the human body can only store a small amount of carbohydrates to be used as energy. So, if all these carbohydrates are taken in excess, they are converted into fat as a reserve of energy for the future.

If we analyze the diet of our ancestors, they only ate plants and animals to obtain the needed nutrients. Therefore, an easy way to start eating healthier is to reduce the consumption of processed foods, specially carbohydrates.

WHAT TO EAT ON THE PALEO DIET

The fundamental base of the paleo diet are vegetables. Followed by meat, fish, or eggs and finally, fruit, nuts, seeds, oils (olive and coconut), spices and herbs.
The proportion of vegetables intake is very high. They can be taken both raw, boiled, stewed or baked.

 

WHAT NOT TO EAT ON THE PALEO DIET

Anything with sugar: soft drinks, processed juices, sweets,  …
Anything with flour, wheat and corn: bread, pasta, pizza, ..

These products are generally unsuitable for human consumption because our digestive system has not adapted to the protein structure of processed grains and excessive carbohydrate loading. That is why the less processed the food, the better and this is not only from this diet. Many other diets claim the return to the original sources of nourishment.

paleo dietWHAT TO EAT OCCASIONALLY

From time to time you can eat coffee, dairy products, alcohol, chocolate, and rice. Experts advise starting the paleo diet introducing the changes little by little, and start gradually replacing products. For example, you can start suppressing soft drinks or bread, and when you don’t miss them anymore, remove the pasta or the artificial juices.
