THE INTERVIEW: MAYSSA ASSAF
ABOUT THE LOOKS
Hi Mayssa,
What is appropriate to wear for the different Ramadan events?
In Ramadan usually there is a dress code to follow while attending Iftars, Suhoors…
I always recommend the following:
For women:
- To choose an Abayas, Kaftan to an iftar or suhoor. The style of the look should be convenient to the place and suits her.
- To avoid wearing lots of accessories or jewelry with the kaftan if it’s too much detailed with embroideries, crystals…
- Color of accessories, jewelry, bag and shoes should match the outfit undertone or color.
- If the lady wants to go trendy she can wear a pair of jeans or trouser with high heels and a decent top and on the top she should wear an open Abaya or long cape with trendy accessories.
- Open and attractive look is not allowed or recommended.
For men:
- Casual chic to formal look, or Jalabiyah.
- No tight jeans or shorts.
It is a traditional celebration, we see kaftans and abayas.. is there any colors of shapes that are trending for this Ramadan season or are they classic timeless pieces?
Usually, these pieces are classic and timeless but no doubt you can still find some trendy kaftans and Abayas.
What would be your favorite designers when it comes to these special occasions?
Selma Benomar, a Moroccan-French designer, she’s super talented in Kaftans.
Sometimes we get invited to many iftars and suhoors. Is it ok to repeat the dresses?
Of course it’s totally fine. Its ok if we wear them more than one time, maybe not the same place.
If inviting people at home, How do you organize yourself to have always the perfect outfit and look fresh, taking into account the heavy cooking and organizing?
I am an organized person and with planning you will be able to organize any event you want and you will be in control. In such event, I always make sure everything is prepared ahead and usually I look happy fresh and elegant and the most important ready to welcome my guests with a smile and big heart.
ABOUT THE ETIQUETTE
What advice would you give a newcomer expat when it comes to protocol in these gatherings?
If the person is a newcomer to such event, he/she should know what usually are the traditions, and if not , just follow the dress code.
DO’S:
He or She should start drinking water and eating only when the others start doing it.
How can we show appreciation and gratefulness to our host?
To thank the host for his hospitality and invite him/her back asap. If the gathering is in a private place you should give the host a gift, something maybe related to the holy month.
